The Sprite Wars Archive Project

If I may be so kind as to ask,Underling, How exactly would we make use of Google's cache service? It only seems to show pages saved by users themselves and not others. How might such a service allow us to find lost images? It doesn't seem likely that many sprite wars related urls would find their way there anyhow.

Normally I just paste the link into google and hope there is a view cache tab next to the result for said link.

Alrighty, I'd like confirmation regarding something:

Ignoring questions of who has saved what, there's still a lot of Sprite wars comics, sprites, and miscellaneous content from majhost saved on the wayback machine. So, I wish to know: would it be alright to post those comics to their respective folders on the Dropbox page, or leave things as is?

...the wayback machine didn't save majhost to what i know about...and if it did I want my stuff back.

Yes. I did mention it earlier actually, but I'll recap: It was some time in May of 2014 when I decided on a whim to go through the majhost accounts of other Sprite wars users and save them to the internet archive. In fact, you and Underling may have been the first people's accounts I worked to save. After that I sort of forgot about archiving anyone's accounts until June or July, and made my last concerted after in November. In total I must have saved around 2750 URLS from the majhost accounts of pretty much everyone who was still active at the time, and a few from inactive members on the side, with more stuff slated to be saved at some nebulous point in the future before you-know what happened.

BUT! There are some caveats and negative factors you should keep in mind before plunging in:

1. I swear, I make no exaggerations when I say that before my little escapade, there was next to nothing from any SW member's maj gallery saved there. I guess no-one bothered before now, and those web crawlers archive.org has auto-saving webpages never reached them for some reason, so certain long lost Comics and Sprites that have become tantamount to Nazi gold on this forum are going to remain lost forever or confined on some lucky soul's hard drive.

2. Dead links/ 404 pages. Before I came to the saddening conclusion mentioned above, I punched in a whole bunch of dead urls for older stuff into the payback machine in the vain hope that they might have been saved previously. Alas this was not the case. A good chunk of saved urls will lead to generic 'not found' pages.

3. Thumbnails.

I saved a whole bunch of images directly to the archive, but in a few cases I saved the entire main page of a gallery, which also caused all the thumbnails to be archived, so if you search for urls using the 'www.[webpage].com/*" method, the results will be padded with thumbnails and the aforementioned dead links.

Has the archive project been considered a success?

Has the archive project been considered a success?

Here's my 2 cents:

With a dropbox established and full of content from a lot of users, that's a major success.

The thing is, we've succeeded mainly in saving content from the most recent campaigns, Gobal and color-coated. Excluding certain users' galleries, there's a big black hole where older content is concerned. The Sprite wars comics folder hasn't been touched since 2015.

Unless I'm wrong, the dropbox page is already short on space.

A possible solution to this would be a protected archive for older sprites Mega.co.nz, as conceived by Commander Evil. But he hasn't been online since last year, so that idea is on hold. I actually collected all the comics I could find that had been saved on the wayback machine, sorted them out and put them in a .RAR in anticipation of posting them on the Mega page. I can't post them on dropbox because the total size of the .rar is 1.2 GB and our dropbox only has 500 megabytes of space left. I like to assume that a lot of what I saved was collected by other users who also saved comics that were deleted by the time i joined, and would really like to post that file on the hypothetical Mega folder where it could be augmented or used to fill in blanks as the need arose, not to mention help contribute to sprite sheet archives, but that seems like a pipe dream as of now. You'll notice on page one that Underling has listed the archive status of all the campaigns. That's been unchanged since the start. I'm pretty sure people have mentioned having .zips of their own, however, they are unable to post them

In short, a reasonable foundation has been laid to delve deeper into archiving efforts, but extenuating circumstances have hindered attempts at serious collaboration.
